International Business in Europe

This four week business immersion trip to Europe provides an exciting opportunity for both undergraduate and graduate business students to spend half of their summer session based in beautiful Strasbourg, France, visiting twelve business and government organizations in both France and Germany. This unique opportunity also includes guided tours of the Alsatian wine valley, Heidelberg Castle, and Fine Arts Museum & City Centre of Strasbourg, France. In addition, students will have free time on weekends to explore other European cities on their own.

Course Descriptions

Undergraduate - BUSN369SA Introduction to International Business (4 credits) This course introduces key concepts defining today's competitive global environment; various cultural, political, economic, and legal systems and their impact on international business. In addition, students will examine a variety of current international business issues and trends, international monetary systems, international trade policies and institutions, and regional economic integration.
Prerequisite: BUSN115

Graduate - INTL500SA Global Perspectives for International Business (3 credits) This overview course presents international strategy, operations, supply chain management, marketing, and finance concepts required for global commerce. Using regional case studies and best-practice examples from familiar multinational corporations, students will gain the management perspective required to understand the unique role of culture, politics, and economics in the execution of multinational business strategy. No prerequisite

What's Included in the Study Abroad Program Fee

Excursions and Visits:
• All cultural excursions, company and institution visits, day trips, entrance fees and excursions as described in the itinerary

Accommodations:
• Twenty-seven nights’ lodging in Strasbourg France at the Chateau de Pourtales; rooms are double occupancy and have private baths.  Use of laundry facilities, student kitchen, and computer lab (free Wi-Fi) included

• Tarte Flambee dinner on the Route du Vin
• Group dinner in Heidelberg
• Farewell dinner

Air and Ground Transportation:
• Roundtrip airfare (note: students departing from outside the continental United States may incur additional costs)
• Public transportation passes for local area scheduled visits
• Ground transportation for certain scheduled excursions via private coach

Onsite Coordinator:
• During all planned activities and excursions while abroad

International Travel Insurance:
• Includes medical coverage, repatriation, lost luggage and third-party liability

Day 1
• Flight to Zurich, Switzerland

Day 2
• Arrive in Zurich
• Transfer from airport to Strasbourg, France
• Check-in at Château de Pourtalès
• Orientation and reception at Château
• Welcome dinner at the Château’s restaurant Le Jardin du Pourtalès

Day 3
• Breakfast at Château
• Morning orientation of the Château and surrounding park & neighborhood
• Afternoon guided walking tour of Strasbourg city center attractions

Day 4
• Breakfast at Château
• Visit to U.S. Consulate General offices in Strasbourg for tour and presentation about educational, commercial, and cultural exchange programs between U.S. and France
• Organized group scavenger hunt to discover and learn about the city of Strasbourg

Day 5
• Breakfast at Château
• Morning meetings with class project team and professors at the Château
• Afternoon meeting with class project team and professors

Day 6
• Breakfast at Château
• Morning visit and presentation at Ernst & Young or Grant Thornton to learn about auditing practices and usage of IFRS in France
• Afternoon visit to Chamber of Commerce for presentation on local economy

Day 7
• Breakfast at Château
• Morning lecture at the Château by DeVry faculty
• Free time to explore Strasbourg city center in afternoon and evening

Day 8
• Breakfast at Château
• Day long guided tour along the famed Alsatian wine route “Route du Vin” with stops at local villages and tour of an Alsatian winery
• Guided tour of the Haut Koenigsbourg Castle
• Tarte Flambé group dinner on return from the “Route du Vin”

Days 9 - 10

• Free days to explore the area or work on class projects
• Participate in organized recreational events at Château, including volleyball tournament, bicycle trip, or group activities

Day 11

• Morning lecture at the Château by DeVry faculty
• Afternoon lecture at the Château by DeVry faculty

Day 12

• Morning tour and presentation of the Council of Europe
• Afternoon visit to Amnesty International

Day 13

• Morning visit to the Germany Ministry of Education for a presentation
• Afternoon visit to Mercedes Benz plant followed by audio-guided tour of the Mercedes Benz Museum
• Free days to explore Strasbourg and the Upper Rhine Valley region on your own or with classmates.  Many historical cities accessible via train from Strasbourg

Day 16
• Breakfast at Château
• Morning guided tour of the Fine Arts Museum (Musee des Beaux Arts) located at the Palais Rohan in Strasbourg
• Afternoon free time for exploring the Palais Rohan or city center

Day 17
• Breakfast at Château
• Free day to work on class projects or explore the area
• Evening to relax with classmates and professors

Day 18
• Breakfast at Château
• Group transfer to Heidelberg, Germany with company visit to John Deere or Huber Kaltemaschinenbau enroute
• Guided tour of the Heidelberg Castle
• Free time to explore Heidelberg on your own
• Group dinner before departing Heidelberg

Day 19

• Visit to the Euro-Institute, an organization specialized in continuing education and consulting on cross-border cooperation
• Lecture at Euro-Institute on Cultural Diversity

Day 20
• Breakfast at Château
• Morning meeting with class project team and professors
• Afternoon visit to International Institute of Human Rights to learn about collective efforts by member universities, researchers and practitioners to embrace human rights

Day 21
• Breakfast at Château
• Free day to explore Strasbourg or work on class projects
• Movie night at the Château organized by your trip coordinators

Days 22 - 24
• Breakfast at Château
• Free days, at your expense, to explore other European cites with classmates.  Many regional cities like Freiburg, Germany, Paris, France, etc. are accessible via train

Day 25
• Breakfast at Château
• Group transfer to Zurich, Switzerland
• Visit to the German Bundesbank to learn about local bank management
• Visit to the Federal Financial Supervisory Authority (BaFin) to learn about the German banking and securities trading systems

Day 26
• Breakfast at Château
• Free day to work on class projects, meet with professors or explore Strasbourg

Day 27
• Breakfast at Château
• Tour of a regional company e.g. Koehler Paper Mill to learn about business operations of European companies
• Free evening with classmates and professors

Day 28

• Farewell visit to Strasbourg city center
• Special farewell dinner in downtown Strasbourg
